Help me write/translate a song in 16 different languages! (ALL LANGUAGES WELCOME)

So here is an interesting project: suggest a seven-syllable phrase in any language(s) you speak (swahili, mandarin, german, french...all welcome) that says something like: "this is the place I love" or "this is where I connect with the world" or "I can't live with out this place" or anything of this kind. Check out the video below for more info and write your ideas as a "comment" under this blog post. If everyone helps we might be able to play it at our next show at SOB's on September 28th. Let's see what you guys can do!

Old Colombian Big Band Music

My good friend and fellow musician Sergio Saavedra (www.myspace.com/sergiosaavedramusic / www.sergiomusic.blogspot.com) shared this video with me today. It's some great footage of Lucho Bermudez, one of Colombia's most important bandleaders of his time. I'm sure you can hear the influence that this music has had in our band.

Vote for saxophonist Sharel Cassity on Downbeat Magazine

Sharel Cassitty (www.sharelcassity.com), the Alto Saxophonist in my band, has been included in the Downbeat Magazine Critics Poll "Rising Star Alto Saxophone" category (August 2010 issue) and we all need to vote for her on-line. Its FREE and its will only take you a minute.

Here's how:
2.) Click on "75th Annual Readers Poll"
3.) If you aren't a Downbeat subscriber, sign up for the free Downbeat Newsletter (don't worry, it's only monthly and you can cancel anytime)
4.)Vote! You'll find my name listed under the "Alto Saxophone" category.

Most of you have seen her playing her ass off  with my big band (specially on "La Primavera") but you can also check out her website (once again: www.sharelcassity.com) and listen to her album "Relentless" and learn more about her.

After opening for Bomba Estereo last night

On my way back to New York from Boston after opening for Bomba Estereo last night. They really have an amazing energy and there sound is really the new sound and one of the most real and organic evolutions of afro-colombian beats. Listening to them you realize how grooves like "drum and bass" and disco are as tribal as "bullerenge" and "puya" which is why they work so well. The long sustained guitar chords, the layers of program samples all contribute to their trance that they manage to create in the room but the groove is always there. I'm really proud to have opened for them and they are truly an inspiration.
