The many great things that happen on 2010

Whenever you are focused on showing your personal "project" to the world the "Ups and Downs" are always more extreme than usual. Sometimes you feel like things could not be better and the next day you feel like quitting. After sometime you just realize that that's just part of the natural flow of things when your heart is set on an ambitious goal. Anyway, looking back at 2010 I can only be great full for all the great things that happen...I don't mean to "blow my own horn". Its just that sometimes you need to realize how lucky you have been in order to find the drive to keep pushing...and yes, this is one of those situations ;)

-We recorded and released our first single "Caribe Contigo"

 http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/caribe-contigo/id393905680?i=393905687&i...

-We did a kick-ass video of that same song which is now being broadcasted on MTV Tr3s

-We performed at the Prospect Park Bandshell in Brooklyn, NY

http://www.prospectpark.org/calendar/event/142210

-Performed at SOB's

-Interview on CNN

-I learned how to use Twitter....well, sort of LOL

twitter.com/gregoriouribe

-Opened for Bomba Estereo

http://eventful.com/cambridge_ma/events/bomba-estereo-gregorio-uribe-/E0-001-...

- And I cannot think of a better way to have finished this year than performing with and idol: the amzaing Carlos Vives himself!

http://www.terra.com.co/atencioncorazon/

So now that I bragged about how good the year was I have to say that there are many, many sleepless nights of confusion, insecurity and disappointment. But it is important to focus on the great things that happen to us...it is important to stay grate full and positive. I wish you all the best for 2011, I thank you for the amazing support this year and I look forward to sharing more music with all of you on this coming year!

PS. I hope your new year's party looks as fun as this one!

Interview TONIGHT on Colombian Radio show 8pm-8:30pm

I have felt completely at home in Colombia after two and a half years of being away. I've always believed that the best thing about Colombia is the kindness of its people, and every time I come here I reaffirm that notion. In every restaurant, bar, store, taxi, every doorman and sales persons has a genuine smile or hand shake and are extremely polite. The "warmness" that you feel when you arrive in Colombia is unique and always makes me feel welcome.

On another note, TONIGHT I will be interviewed on colombian radio show "La Radio De la Noche" on RCN 770AM from 8:00pm - 8:30pm so stay tuned if you are in Colombia! Here is a link about the show: http://www.rcnradio.com/programa/la-radio-de-la-noche/la-radio-de-la-noche

Classism in Colombia

As I was checking Facebook this morning I saw that my friend Mario Chamorro posted an article from the NY Times about how classism and racism in Colombia are represented in the country's largest beauty pageant:

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/01/world/americas/01colombia.html?_r=1

It is a great article and it reminded me of a song a wrote a few years ago titled "Nacion" that I want to share it with you.

Payola

En el aire

Por: Heriberto Fiorillo | 7:41 p.m. | 21 de Noviembre del 2010

Heriberto Fiorillo

Maria Schneider

So I had a last minute gig in Chelsea. I set up my gear and then I had sometime before starting so I went walking around and ended up walking on The Highline (never been there before...very nice by the way). As I was walking back I recognized Jazz Composer Maria Schneider. I introduced myself and told her how I had seen her talks at Berklee and how I had some friends who took part in her workshops. Anyway, she was incredibly nice and she'll have some concerts at the Jazz Standard in NYC in November so check here webpage out. She is truly one of today's most important Jazz composers!

After opening for Bomba Estereo last night

On my way back to New York from Boston after opening for Bomba Estereo last night. They really have an amazing energy and there sound is really the new sound and one of the most real and organic evolutions of afro-colombian beats. Listening to them you realize how grooves like "drum and bass" and disco are as tribal as "bullerenge" and "puya" which is why they work so well. The long sustained guitar chords, the layers of program samples all contribute to their trance that they manage to create in the room but the groove is always there. I'm really proud to have opened for them and they are truly an inspiration.

Whatever happened to "I just wanna be a musician!"

Email, emails, emails...the musicians, the producer, the venue, the sound guy, the publisher, the promoter, the press, the newsletter, the blog.....aaaahhh!! I should get a job as a secretary 'cause I'm getting pretty good at this. Writing music; not really a priority for musicians these days. Nope, you gotta get your shit together and then...one day...maybe...oh what a beautiful day that will be...when I'll be able to just think about the music, the songs, the harmony, the lyrics, the arrangements, the band, the show...well, that's what I signed for when I decided to be a musician...what happened? Anyone...

Another awesome stranger in the city

Half an hour ago I got to the Jamaica Station to catch the Long Island Rail Road and leave the city for the 4th of July weekend. I got there early so I walked around and thought I grab something to eat and, of course, I ended up going into the "chicken-sandwich- fries-and-soda-all-for-$4.60-place"...does that conflict with me going to the hamptons for the weekend?! You tell me...

Anyway, when I sat down a man sat next to me and said "I think I know where I recognize you from". At that point I'm guessing he's gonna say something like...well I wasn't sure what he would say but I thought we was gonna say something random just to start one of those awkward, but every now and then interesting, subway conversations. And as I look at him skeptically waiting for him to make up something he says: "you have an amazing big band" (the word he used wasn't "amazing" but it was something good...which is what got me exited and is why I'm wasting my time, and yours, by writing this small anecdote.)

So this man actually had been to the "encounter of colombian musicians" a few weeks ago and saw us perform there. He's been reaserching african music and its diaspora in the Americas. He knows pretty much all of the outdoor shows that happen in the city and we had such a pleassent converstion. Unfortunately we didn't have too much time to talk as I had to run to the LIRR but I'm sure I'll be seeing Kevin again.

So, this is just another proof that this city is both huge and tiny at the same time. (Sorry for the spelling mistakes...I don't know how to work the spell check on my phone)

Today at Rutgers University, NJ

Today we're going to Rutgers University in New Jersey to play for a talk show which will be broadcasted soon (I'm still not sure where but I'll put up the info when I have it). We'll be playing one song and they'll be interviewing us. The whole band wouldn't fit in the studio(!) so it's only the rhythm section for today: Ignacio "Nacho" Hernandez on guitar, Andres Rotmistrovsky on bass, Victor Cruz on "alegre" drum, Marcelo Woloski playing "tambora" drum and Karina Colis on Drum Set. I'll be singing and playing accordion.

SHOW DESCRIPTION

"As the Argentine singer Sofia Rei Koutsovitis led her multinational band,(…) the passion and clarity with which she assayed a tricky mix of South American rhythms and jazz-inflected harmonies made clear why she has been embraced by New York City audiences from Carnegie Hall to the hippest downtown haunts." - Phil Lutz, New York Times

"One of the most versatile and in-demand singers on the New York music scene." - Simon Calle,  All About Jazz

Best Latin Jazz Vocalist of  2009 Award - The Latin Jazz Corner

Sofia Rei Koutsovitis is one of New York’s most passionate, charismatic and inventive vocalists, who brings depth and fullness of a riveting voice to her second album, Sube Azul, as well as to her live performance. Following up on Ojalá, her polyglot and multilingual debut, she offers this time a collection of mostly original Spanish-language songs that build on a new set of growth experiences since moving to New York in 2005.

Originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, the album is grounded in traditional South American rhythms such as chacarera, zamba and vidala from Argentina, Afro-peruvian festejo and lando, Afro-Uruguayan candombe, Colombian cumbia and bullerengue and other genres that merge involving jazz harmonies, electronic sounds and rich improvisations. Singing in Spanish, Portuguese or English, Sofia's voice is graceful as well as sophisticated, tying together diverse influences in a program full of rhythmic complexity, melody and romance.

Sofia is a restless artist, one of the most versatile and in-demand singers on the New York music scene.
