Growing up with Boleros

Growing up I use to listen to my parents play romantic Boleros all the time...and I have to be honest I wasn't really crazy about this music (especially when you were stuck in the car on a three hour road trip!) But, In my defense I was about 9 years old so you can't really blame me for thinking that it was boring "old-people" music.

However, the years go by and all of a sudden you start enjoying this music that used to sound so cheesy and old-fashioned and you start releating to it (probably something to do with getting your heart broken for the first time).

So one of the songs that I wrote for my first album "Pluma Y Vino", is a Bolero titled "Una Excusa" ("An Excuse") and it just goes to show how much we are influenced by what we listen to as kids, and how we slowly begin appreciating some of what "the grown-ups" used to like.

I hope you enjoy my Bolero "Una Excusa" and share it with your close ones. Happy Holidays!

Fundación ALMA aims to make music and arts education accessible to disadvantaged children in Latin America and the Caribbean.

These disadvantages include: relative poverty (living on less than US$2 per day), special needs including but not limited to deafness and blindness, and abuse or neglect. In many cases these children do not have access to the education that could open doors to success later in life and do not experience the joy and satisfaction of participating in artistic activities. ALMA’s goal is to provide them with tools to enrich their educational experiences through music and the arts. Our programs encourage children to succeed in all areas of education, giving them a creative outlet to strengthen their personal development, and thereby allowing them to later contribute to the development of the region as a whole.

My visit to the "Porro-music" Festival in San Pelayo (Cordoba, Colombia)

About a month ago, while in Colombia, I had the chance to go to the Porro-music Festival ("Festival Del Porro") in the town of San Pelayo, Corodoba. It was a unique experience to see, listen and dance to dozens of Porro bands and to share with local friends!

Porro bands ("Banda de Porro") are large ensembles of about 15 musicians that consist of snare drum, cymbals, bass drum, trombones, euphoniums ("bombardinos"), clarinets and trumpets (I personally find much similarity between Porro music and Porro bands and New Orleans "Second Line" music). For this festival many bands come from all over the country to participate in the contest, but the best part is the something called "La Alborada":

After a night of partying and dancing, at 4am all of the bands that will take part in the festival gather around the town's main square ("Plaza"). Here everybody starts drinking and lighting candels that are held up in the air while dacing and then the "Fandango" begins with EVERYBODY going towards the Festival stage in a very unique mixture of dancing/walking/drinking/shouting/candle-holding! This last for about an hour or two (Not that I was checking my watch but by the time you get to the Festival Stage it's already daylight) and then all the bands get up on the stage and play together some classic Porro tunes (the most famous one being "Maria Barilla") and the party simply keeps going for a few more hours.

Anyway, here's some footage that I took while I was there so you can get an idea...it also includes footage of the kind family and friends that where generous enough to let us stay with them during the festival (there are no Hotels in San Pelayo...at least to my knowledge). Maybe you'll start planning your trip so you can witness this unique cultural expresion of the "Sinú" region of Colombia for your selves. Check it out:

Latin music icon Joe Arroyo died today

Today a great icon for Latin music past away and I want to share one of his most famous songs with those of you who are not familiar with his music. Although he's known for many of his Salsa hits ("La Rebelion", "En Barranquilla me quedo", "Tania") he was constantly inovating and creating a unique sound to the extent that, today, musicians use the term "Joe Son" to define his unique blend of cumbia, soca, salsa and other caribbean rhythms (for examples of this check out: "Te Quiero Mas", "Tal Para Cual", "Musa Original", "Centurion de la noche"). As a musician I will always be inspired by his music and legacy and I'm sure many of you will dance to his music at some point in your lives...that is, if you haven't already done so. Viva el Joe!!!

Recording Solo Album

Hi folks, I have some important news:

As you all know it's been difficult to find the funding to record a full big band album so we plan on re-launching our fundraising campaign in the fall and really pushing it so that we can record more big band music for you to enjoy!

With that being said, let me tell you that it's been very frustrating to have so many songs written and not being able to share them with you. Many of you have come up to me after a shows and asked, "When are you going to record this or that song?" and it has been frustrating for me not to be able to give you a specific answer. So a few weeks ago I decided to unleash all of this energy, all of this lyrics, harmonies and melodies and started recording a modest and intimate solo album to in order to share some of my songs with you. This album will consist of some of my original songs that I do not perform with the big band. The core of this album will consist of myself on vocals and guitar but I will also include some friends and special guests as well as other instruments that I will recorded myself. I'm recording at my good friend's studio Ears and Gears (www.earsandgears.com) which is very convenient since it's right in my basement so I can record on my pajamas (isn’t that convenient?).

Because of its simple nature, this album will be feasible at a very reasonable cost. However it will be possible thanks to the support of some friends and family who will be sponsoring most of the songs. I have already recorded many of the songs and hopefully I will be releasing it in July or August of this year. I can’t wait to share it with all of you!

My main concern is that all of you will understand that the premise of this solo album is both to (finally!) share some of my original music with you and also to use it as therapy for myself (if I didn’t start recording now I was gonna go crazy!). What I mean is that I want to make it clear that my priority is, and will continue to be,  the Gregorio Uribe Big Band and in the Fall I intend to put all of my effort in raising the funds to record our first big band album.

So anyway, from now on I’ll keep you posted on how the recording is going with some videos and blog entries.

Here’s a first video of me recording guitar for one of the tunes…more to come soon.

Thank you all for your constant support.

GUBB @ Zinc Bar for "CINCO DE MAYO" - Special feature: Hugo Moreno's original Cumbia!

We're back at Zinc Bar for our monthly show the first Thursday of every month, and this time it happens to coincide with "CINCO DE MAYO"! So since we have three multi-talented Mexicans in the band (Karina, George and Hugo) we're gonna give you a little taste of Mexico at some point during the night by this "cuates".

For this occasion we are having a very special feature by our trumpet player Hugo Moreno from El Paso, Tex as! Hugo will be performing one of his original Cumbias which he has arranged for our big band....this is really exiting and I promise you don't wanna miss it.

Finally, last time we asked everyone to wear tie and we had a great outcome so from now on WEAR A TIE TO OUR SHOWS TO SHOW HOW MUCH YOU LOVE OUR MUSIC!! (Do not to worry...this is not formal, just wear it loosely and the crazier the tie the better!...we specially love how girls look with these!)

Our friends from CUMBIAGRA will be opening GUBB show at Zinc Bar - this Thursday

As the Cumbia movement in New York City keeps growing, different bands with different approaches to this infectious rhythm begin collaborating and creating a solid Cumbia scene. The Gregorio Uribe Big Band, which performs the first Thursday of every month as Zinc Bar in the G reenwich Village, has announced that they will invite Brooklyn-based funky Cumbia-band Cumbiagra to open their show this Thursday April 7th. With a total of four members that look like they just came back from a day at the beach, Cumbiagra provides a contrast with Gregorio Uribe’s 16-piece ensemble and it’s jazz-influenced arrangements, but they have two things in common: they both love Cumbia and they’re both masters of at making the dance floor happen.

Skectches On a Napkin - Another New York anecdote

Tonight, as I was playing boleros at Cafe Español in the Village, I looked to the bar and there was a gentleman standing up staring at me while sketching something.  Twenty mintes later when I took a break and went to the bar, I saw what he had drawn with a black pen and red wine on a cloth napkin:

Dibujo_servilleta_-_by_wayne_ensrud
He was generous enough to give it to me and he told me great stories about the times when he painted The Count Basie Big Band, Duke Ellington, Tom Jobim and dozens more. This artist's name is Wayne Enrud (www.wayneensrud.com) and although he's been around for a while, he has the spirit of a teenager.

Thank you Wayne for such a unique presenrt. I will cherish it.

Alex Alvear and Mango Blue - AMAZING NEW ALBUM!

Since I heard this album it became one of my favorites ever! I'm a friend and huge fan of Alex Alvear and his music. This Boston-based Ecuatorian bass player, singer and composer has a perfect blend a "tumbao" and hard latin groove with fresh and modern harmonies and arrangements...a true inspiration for me and something to aim for with my music. This band features amazing musicians at the top of their game, many of which I have the pleasure of knowing personally. And guess who's on timbales? The one and only, the drummer for the Gregorio Uribe Big Band, the master of groove: Karina Colis!!!

I highly recommend you buy this CD right now because its a rare jewel and you'll enjoy it weather you wanna dance to it or listen to it while you snap clave with your fingers. (Only $10)
